Leuconotopicus borealis is a small subspecies of woodpecker found in the longleaf pine forests of the southeast. The common name refers to a small tuft of red on the crest of the male. Listed as “near threatened” by the US National Fish and Wildlife Service, these birds face the double threat of deforestation and competition by other species.
