A common sight in the southeastern US, the Anolis carolinensis is a medium sized native species of lizard. Not currently listed as endangered, they have faced territorial encroachment from the invasive brown anole, which has driven them out of their niche in ground-level feeding.

Though related more closely to iguanas than chameleons, green anoles have the distinction of being able to change color to camouflage with their surroundings. They can alter their color from a deep brown to pale green very quickly, and can shade the area around their eyes black when stressed. This gives the illusion of larger predatory eyes and can help intimidate rival lizards.

The male anole has an enlarged dewlap beneath the chin which is expanded in a mating ritual colloquially termed “showing his moneybags” in southern parlance.
